Micro-Aggression is Real
LGBT+ rights have had an unprecedented amount of progress in the past few years. Don’t Ask Don’t Tell was repealed, marriage equality is the law of the land, and the rate of suicides for LGBT+ teens have decreased. Surrounded by this enormous amount of progress, it is easy to forget one essential truth- Homophobia isn’t always blatant. It often exists in everyday conversations, simple small remarks that serve as harmful to the individual on the receiving end.
These remarks are referred to as Micro aggression, and they’re entrenched in our society. The dictionary definition for a micro aggression is “a statement, action, or incident regarded as an instance of indirect, subtle, or unintentional discrimination against members of a marginalized group such as a racial or ethnic minority”. For this project, members of the Pace University community were asked to write down a micro aggression they had encountered, and then they were photographed with these incidents. This is the outcome.
